My Background

Read below to learn. more about me and why I'm qualified to teach what I do.

Brief Bio

Headshot5.jpg

I moved every few years growing up, living in various states around the eastern half of the U.S. I was always ahead in school and learned how to help my peers from an early age. In high school I gained experience tutoring elementary students as well as other high school students.

In 2006 I joined the army and went to college at the U.S. Military Academy. During my last two years at the Academy I served in a variety of staff and leadership roles, and often trained soldiers in tactics, equipment, or ethics with little to no preparation time. I performed two research studies for the Army, traveled widely, earned a degree in physics, and studied computer science on the side.

After being medically discharged from the Army, I worked a variety of jobs. I taught public classes at the Lexington Public Library, taught physics and astronomy at Eastern Kentucky University, and then left these jobs to earn my M.S. in Biology from the University of Kentucky. I supported myself through graduate school in part by running my own tutoring business.  After graduation, I took a job at the Janelia Research Campus, which is part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. There I joined a neuroscience lab where I developed software to  streamline or automate their experimental processes and data analysis. I continue this work today as a self-employed consultant.

I am married to the love of my life and have two beautiful children ages 1 and 2. They remind me every day that some of the best learning happens through play, and taking oneself too seriously can be the death of curious inquiry.
